In 2025, Veggie Saigon surveyed 500 diners in Da Nang about vegan lunch habits. Results confirmed some things we already knew, and revealed some surprises.
72% of diners said lunch feels 'incomplete' without rice. This holds even for the younger generation (18–30 years old) — 65% in this group still prioritize rice over noodles for lunch. Vietnamese food culture remains deeply tied to rice.
89% of diners said a 'reasonable' lunch should be under 60,000đ per person. But 71% were willing to pay more for 'something special' — with 'special' defined diversely: beautiful space (38%), extra toppings (27%), included drink (35%).
Reasons for eating vegan in Da Nang: health (52%), religion/spirituality (31%), trying something new (11%), environment (6%). This differs significantly from global trends where environment is the top reason in Western countries. Vietnamese consumers prioritize personal health.
Most beloved vegan lunch dishes: vegan pho (28%), vegan banh mi (23%), rice with multiple dishes (21%), vegan bun cha (18%), fresh spring rolls (10%). Veggie Saigon structures its menu and promotions based on these findings.
Data is the foundation of good decisions. But the best research is still sitting down, tasting, and talking with the person who is eating.
